The 1st International Week of Reading to Kids was organised by Celé Česko čte dětem (Every Czech Reads to Kids) in co-operation with All of Poland Reads to Kids. The event was held in cities and municipalities throughout the Czech Republic and the Republic of Poland from 1 to 7 June 2011. The 1st Week of Reading to Kids was launched by an inauguration at a symbolic location on the Olše River, which connects, although formerly divided, the towns of Český Těšín and Cieszyn. The superb programme included performances by artists, such as Jaromír Nohavica, Ewa Farna, Michal Viewegh and Bolek Polívka.
The main purpose of the International Week of Reading to Kids was to initiate a permanent international co-operation of organisations, which, through their activities, educate people about the love of literature, and, through collective reading help to build strong family bonds. The International Week of Reading to Kids, which is unparalleled in Europe, inspired plenty of Czech schools, libraries, literary cafes and the general public that are happy to organise these literary festivals every year from 1 to 7 June throughout the whole country.
This event launched an international project at European level, entitled ‘All of Europe Reads to Kids’. The organisations participating in the project are: Cała Polska czyta dzieciom (AII of Poland Reads to Kids), Visa Lietuva skaito vaikams – ugdymas skaitant (All of Lithuania Reads to Kids) and Celé Slovensko čita deťom (All of Slovakia Reads to Kids).
